This bar-hammer type dating to the 1840s was the most common pepperbox pistol. It consisted of a cluster of barrels (here, six) bored from a single block, each with its own nipple. The cluster was rotated on an axial pin after each shot, bringing the next nipple into position under the hammer. Since the hammer blocked the line of sight, the gun was only accurate at point blank range.
