This is a targe from the Scottish Highlands. It is a round shield of wood with loops on the back through which the whole arm could pass, leaving the hand free to hold a weapon. This example has a central brass boss and a pattern of brass and copper studs, the arrangement of which dates this example to 1700-1715, around the time of the Jacobite Risings that attempted to restore the Stuarts to the throne.
