Jam ma dao from China, Asia. Owned by James Thomas Hooper. Purchased by the Museum from him in 1930.
The jam ma dao is a large and heavy weapon. The handle is just as long as the blade shown here so that in total it measures over 1.5 metres in length. Initially it was thought to be an executioner's sword, but it is more likely that it was used as a two-handed polearm by foot soldiers and bandits to cut down horses and riders. Jam ma dao translates as 'horse-cutting sword'.
